Smoothie season is upon us! It’s been so long since I’ve had smoothies regularly. They are usually my go-to for breakfast in the Spring/Summer months. Now that Spring is here, I’m starting to get back into making smoothies again. My favourite combination for smoothies is berries and chocolate. The smoothie I want to share with you today is a Chocolate Berry Protein Smoothie with Beets.
This Chocolate Berry Protein Smoothie with Beets is filled with antioxidants from the berries. I used frozen blueberries, raspberries and strawberries for this smoothie. Antioxidants help to counteract toxins in the environment. I love using berries in my smoothies or putting them in oatmeal. They can be used in so many different ways, and eating them will give you all of their glorious health benefits.
HEALTHY SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS
In addition to berries, I used New Zealand whey chocolate protein powder for this smoothie. New Zealand whey protein is one of my favourite types of protein powder because it is so pure. The brand I use is called Kaizen. This protein is very smooth and creamy. It doesn’t have any grit to it at all. If you are vegetarian or vegan, you can definitely swap it for a plant-based protein instead. I like to alternate between whey and plant-based protein.
There is also cocoa powder, banana, beet root powder, chia seeds, ashwaganda and medicinal mushrooms in this beverage. The cocoa powder gives the smoothie that lovely chocolate-y flavour. The smoothie is naturally sweetened using banana and berries. It is not overly sweet, which is great for those who are watching their sugar intake. I’ve also included some beetroot powder for its blood cleansing, detoxifying properties. The beetroot powder, along with the berries, gives this smoothie its stunning colour.
The chia seeds give you a little touch of extra plant based protein and fibre to keep you filling full. I added some superfoods such as ashwaganda and medicinal mushrooms to help balance mood and stress.
SUPERFOOD SMOOTHIE ADD-ON’S
I love adding herbs and mushrooms to my smoothies. It is a simple and effective way to get these powerful foods into your diet. Instead of taking a supplement, powders are excellent to add to your foods. They are also easier for your body to break down.
Some of my favourite superfood smoothie add-on’s are:
- MCT oil
- scarlet cordyceps
- reishi mushroom, and many more!
BENEFITS OF ASHWAGANDA
Ashwaganda is an Ayurvedic herb that helps to balance out imbalances within the body. It is considered to have adaptogenic qualities, making it an effective herb for helping the body adapt to stress. Ashwaganda is one of my favourite herbs of all-time. I take it in supplement form and in powder form. It just depends on what I have on hand at the time. This is one of those herbs that I believe everyone should be taking!
