Lately I haven’t been getting in as many greens into my diet as I would like to. With the copious amount of rich, and starch filled foods from last week’s Thanksgiving feasting, my body is in desperate need of some clean, green goodness. It’s been awhile since I’ve made or had a green smoothie, but I think the time has come to make green smoothies a regular staple in my diet again.
If you are in Canada, I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving! I definitely wasn’t drinking green smoothies during Thanksgiving, that’s for sure! My Thanksgiving turned out to be pretty great, despite feeling rather exhausted after a long week of dealing with a sick little kitty, and nursing her back to health. Unfortunately, my cat ended up getting extremely constipated the week leading up to Thanksgiving weekend, and she had to have three enemas, a manual extraction and go on a round of antibiotics. Poor baby! Luckily, I am happy to report that she is healthy again and in vibrant spirits. I was really hoping to do some Thanksgiving inspired recipes, but alas, things did not go according to plan (as per usual). Such is life! I am hoping that during December, I will have lots of time to post some fun, Christmas-y inspired recipes!
Green Smoothie Benefits
As the title suggests, this green smoothie with lemon is super refreshing! I absolutely love the combination of greens and citrus fruits. The lemon really adds some brightness to this smoothie, and cuts through the super green taste. The celery also gives a freshness, and a touch of saltiness as well. The banana and pineapple have got you covered in terms of sweetness and add a tropical bunch! This smoothie is not overly sweet, in my opinion. If you are concerned about sweetness, you can always do half a banana, rather than a whole banana.
Notes About The Recipe
Some vanilla flavoured protein powder would also be great in this smoothie and take it up an extra notch, if you wanted something a bit more filling! You might be thinking to yourself that putting zucchini in a smoothie sounds like an awful idea, but the truth is that you can’t taste the zucchini at all. You are getting all the glorious health benefits of eating vegetables such as zucchini and celery in this smoothie without having to taste the flavour of them that much. This smoothie is a great thing to have first thing in the morning to help cleanse your body. There’s nothing quite like fresh greens first thing in the morning, I have to say! Celery is deeply cleansing and hydrating to the body, making it a great thing to have when you first wake up.
