This recipe has been on my list of recipes to make for quite awhile. Schizandra Rose Lemonade with Holy Basil. This is the sexiest, most feminine lemonade you will ever drink! It is filled to the brim with superfood goodness and will leave you feeling energized, yet zen. Honestly, how cute is that blush pink colour though?
What the heck is Schizandra Berry you might ask? Schizandra is well known in Chinese medicine for being the ‘five-flavour’ berry. It is native to the forests of Northern China and has a woody flavour to it. It is used as an adaptogenic herb because it helps your body increase resistance to stress, while simultaneously also increasing your energy levels.
Additionally, it helps to support and detoxify the liver and can reduce inflammation in the body. Schizandra can help promote beautiful skin by cleansing the liver. Schizandra is definitely a must-have herb for anyone looking for healthier skin.
In Chinese Herbalism, Schizandra is said to contain all five flavour elements/energies; wood, fire, earth, metal and water. It has an incredibly unique flavour profile and gives this homemade lemonade a very distinct taste.
The Schizandra Berry I used for this recipe is from New Earth Organics. It generally comes in freeze-dried powder form. You should be able to find it at your local health food store.
This DIY lemonade also contains pure rose water, which gives it a subtle floral flavour. I also added some of Botanica’s Daily Zen shot with Holy Basil to this elixir to elevate its healing properties. This fermented Holy Basil has the ability to help heal the gut and also to calm the nervous system. Due to the fermentation process, the holy basil is easily absorbed by the body, making it extra powderful. Holy Basil is a herb I often use to help with my anxiety, nervousness or stress. It has a very calming effect. I will usually take between 2-4 teaspoons per day.
These tonics are some of my favourite ways to help alleviate indigestion, or to help stabilize my mood. Not only will you be sipping on a delicious, refreshing lemonade, but you will also be getting a host of health benefits from all these incredible superfoods.
